Final Render

In my final render i chose to use glass as a material as i thought it made it look clean finished and shiny. Making them more identifiable as 3D objects

Creating my other models

In order to create a model that reflects my other ring precedents i asked around at what the best method was and learnt the if you have created a solid form you can expose all lines by using the mesh modifier or latice in order to create a grid like image. I did this and then played around with other models to end up with other modifiers such a symmetry. and i ended up with this abstract design.
\
Im reasonably happy wiht this form, but thought that after being 3D printed it wouldnt look neat or refined or intentional like the other models would look.

Creating my 3D printed model

It became evident that i suck at solidworks. so i have decided that wihtin time frame and with my huge lack of skill i should stick to simple shapes and use form and arrangment to make complexities within the form (somehting i have taken form my precedent images).

In solid works i decided to start with a simple shape like a circle. In order to give the potential of layers upon layers i created a disc with a hollow center as it could be effective to look through. I feel that it is also utilising the 3D pritner as it is hard without the 3D printer to produce perfect circles.

This is two views of my final model. As you can see its very basic but I plan to position and duplicate them in 3DS max and position them in a dynamic way.

keeping in ind that im goin got have to remove all the crap from around the final form, therefore it cannot be to elaborate as it wont be able to be a clean finished item. I began by making pattern through repetition and symmetry. However once I got to this point it became clear that i was going to have to modify the form. Any more discs added and it will be extremely fiddly and with disguise the pattern. so i began experimenting with some modifiers.

The first one i looked at was Twist, as alot of my precendents look a bit like htey have been twistted It gives the form a sense of movement and utilises the round shape and form of the model.

I like how in this form when i experimented with the position of the twist i was able to make only on plane of it twist and the rest stay flat which made it quite an abstarct little form.

Then i decided it could be quite effective to spherify it, literally turning it into a ball.

This is quite simple but then i thoughti could put the form insde this form so it was round on the inside bu thad this complex centre.

I experimented with combining the two forms.
After deciding i didnt like that, and it almost makes my model look tacky. i chose to stick to the first twisting one for my first model. once i shaped it down to the corrct size i begamn to realise that the pieces will be extremely thin.. so i used the shell midfier to make the surfaces thicker.

This is my first final form, which i am very happy with. i think that although shell made these extra ridges and lines it still looks quite effective and almost adds to the design.

Sketches

From my precedent images i have created some sketches. The common theme in the round precedents is that the have repetition and just use their positioning to create complexities.

Precedent Images For Project 3

It was heavily emphasised in the brief that we need to utilise the 3D printer. So I want to create somehting that cant be created in the workshop or with the laser cutter. This automaticaly made me think of curves which are hard to perfect in the workshop, then the creation of round intertwining lines is something that cant be made on the laser cutter in an intricate way.

I plan to expand from my last assignments where the common theeme was the sense of movement and rotation within the forms. The first assignment i digitally created forms that represented my words, fluid, spiral and movement and in the second assignment using 2d planes i achieved this by my choice of shapes and by carefully choosing ambient space in order to give that sense of "twist" and rotation.

This one has many planes that are connected at different points. this gives it a sense of twist and moveement which is quite effective.

This one is simple shapes and forms that have been carefully positioned in order to interlock them.. somehting that could be achieved with 3D printing and that could come across quite effectively.

this one is the same sort of shapes that have all been connected and intertwined. This is quite a complex design but has created a cool little form.

Whilst looking at 3D precedents i came across some quite cool 3D printed rings. These were a few of my favourite pieces that could be considered when i start making my designs.

This one has a whole pile of straight lines making up different components of the ring, which could be effective and also quite simple to make. Simple is key as i am not too good at solidworks.

Key in this assignment is to realise that i dont have a lot of time before the STL file is due in, and also that I'm not exactly a pro at the programmes.

Opitonal Comparisson

I decided to give the comparisson a go.

Ideally i would have left more time to complete this so that i could change the lighting or somehting.I tried to use the comparrison as a chance to showtwo different sides of the model and materials but also the realtionship between my final render and my final form. In the right image it shows the subtlety of the acrylic in contrast with the strength in the cardboard, where as the render's main focus is the plastic nature of the acrylic.

Final Render

For my Final render i used glass, and ultered with the transparecny and translucency. I then added an omni light and chose to go with the hite background to give a clean finish and a plastic/acrylic effect.

Final Image Of Model

This is the final image i selected for my model. i chose it because it shows a clear realtion to my digital model and shows the contrast between the materials effectively.

I decided to base my render on this image. I decided it would be good to experiment with glass or plastic materials on my digital render to relate to my physical model. In the last project i went suite overboard with my backgrounds, so this time i iwll make sure to keep it extremely plain (black or white).

My Final Form

I chose to use the cardboard star in the middle of the acrylic as a contrast and clear centre point. I used aluminium tubing as rods and then used metal eyelets to seal the tubing and create neat studs at each end. I found my form reasonably hard to photograph, howvere of my final photographs these were my favourite few.

I lik this one for its subtlety and the way it highlights the cardboard rather than the acrylic.

I like the way the different angles of the images captured the lines mirrored pieces in a different allignment helping to give it that sense of movement.

This image unlike the others which made the form look quite smplistic, makes the form look more complex with the clear lines and layering of pieces. This image also highlihgts the depth of the form.

I like this image because it make shows the form as being quite flat and almost 2D, where it is actually quite deep and complex with its many layers in person.

I like the subtlety of the acrylic and its opactiy in contrast with the cardboard and tried to hihglihgt that in my photos.

Starting to assemble my final form

I have recieved my lazer cutted pieces and was really happy with the results. The cardboard looked rather burnt so will need to be painted, but i have decided that i wont use all the cardboard pieces anyway, so ideally i can use these pieces to experiment with how i will connect the pieces and to create another sketch model.

I have chosen to use only acrylic but possible one piece int he center, cardboard in order to have an effective contrast.

I Originally though i would use beads or small plastic pieces in between each layers to make it more dimensional.

Obviously for my final model i would seal the ends far better, but i have decided that this looks messy anyway and that  think i will try threadin the acrylic without beads in between to seperate them.

overall i am happy with the pieces however have decided to now experiment with the order of placement of the pieces, which will have to be done with the acrylic pieces as it wil look completely different when done in acrylic.

Final Template for Acrylic and Cardboard

Form my sketch models, i decided that layers of shapes ppointing in one direction (to give a sense of movement) will look the most effective and be the easiest to create. This also relates the closest to my final sketch model. Originally i though i would thread the pieces but i think that becasue not every piece has the four holes of support that thick wire or rod will be more suitable.

The easiest way for me to decided on size and diameters in proportion to all the pieces was to create my final skecth model on illustrator, then print it out and double check.

i did this by overlapping the pieces then copying the form and deleting irrelevant pieces in order to be left with each piece with the holes in the correct places.

In order to make them more evident on the blog i altered the point to thicker, however the specifications is to have the points at 0.01.
I have created a sense of movement and rotation thoruhg the use of lines towrds one direction. i think this will be effective.

I dont know whether i will use acrylic or cardboard. im most likely to use acryulic but like the idea of using a combination of the two. because we dont have to use every peice i have decided to use the same template for both materials and then when i have the pieces decided how i want it to be. I have two pieces of each shape on each material as i would like it to be reasonably thick and be reflected onboth sides.. symmetrical.

This is the final image of the template for the laser cutter. because my peices are being threaded together with wire i didnt need to worry too much about the relationship of the pieces other than the holes being in the correct places. but this wasnt too hard.

Precedent from my 81 iterations

I have used this one as a precedent. i htink i can effectively use layers to creae this cool vertex effect in 3D.

Project 2 - Precedents

For project 2 we have one A4 sheet of 1mm card and 1 A4 sheet of 2mm acrylic to create a 3D model with using the lazer cutter. Part of the requirements is that you are not allowed to use any adhesive.

Examples of what can be made using a lazer cutter and effective us eof layers are below:

The way we see the small layers inside each other makes the overall composition of the hands. its gives it a 3d effect as if someone hands ahve been pushe thorugh the wood. this is very effective and a way of making small changes to each layer to give the overall form depth.
This one is made out of just acrylic. it as different points of the human skull cut out then compacted together which if you look closely makes it seeme like the head ahs been squished together.
this is an example of thinkin goutside just slots to connect the peices. in this one the used different shaped and sized slots as well as string.

Initial Sketch Models

Initially i decided to concentrate on the way that my precedent 3ds max design twist and shows a sense of movememnt and rotation. Keeping in mind that im shocking at maths and dont have a lot of time to create the illustrator files i decided to keep my design reasonably simple and focus on effective ways of representing this.

This first method is just taking a simple geometric shape like a square and by repositioning the holes i am able to make this rotation giving a sense of curve in which i investigated throughout project 1.

If i was to do somehting like this, i think it will more closely relate to my chosen 3ds model, if i was to rotate 360, obviously using paper to tril this made it hard as it was very thin and flimsy wheres as the acrylic and cardboard will be a lot thicker.

81 Iterations

For some strange reason i left this to last, and this was far from easy. Because my 81 iterations had so many polys i had them in small groups in order to speed up the process. After trying to get all the iterations into one file and it proving impossible, i decided the bes toption was to do it on photoshop.

Morning of hand in, i began my incredibly elaborate idea of having all iterations sprialling around my final. This didnt turn out as great as i thought however i still think it clearly shows my final and then when you look carefully its evident the porcess ad steps i went thourhg. i colour coded each stage that i went through form the beginining in 3ds max in order to get a fading in effect (which i hoped would make it more evident that i was trying to spiral the forms. My final composition of my 81 Iterations was as follows.

Although upon first glance it isnt necessarily evdent that its a spiral i think it becomes clearer once you know my intentions. Alternatively my other plan for the iterations was to have a grid with the iterations structured in order of relatability. However i did not have time to do this, which proves i should have been more time concious throughout this assignment.

Final Image and render

For my final image i rendered with a standard material and added the map below. I wanted to use these colours as under the sea there can be very exotic colours like this.
I then changed the translucentcy to give it a more fluid, floating effect. I added in spot lighting in order to extend the spotlight in the environment image onto the form. This made it seem like it was in its natural environment.
This is my final rendered image. It relates directly to my precedent image of the jellyfish and coincides with my three chosen words. Ideally if i had had more time i would have liked to of done more experiemnts to choose my final image from.

Rendering

Once my final image was selected i began to experiment with rendering..

This one i have added the material as translucent glass and a map of paua shell. i decided to relate my final image to the ocean just like the jelly fish precedent which it reminds me of.

I like this one but feel it is a bit busy. I dont think i will have enough time but idealy i want to reinfroce the spiral and spiral the 80 iterations around this final image.

I like this one because it is simple and again relates to my image. Like my image however i would like to add more lighitng and some nicer colours, maybe even make it more opaque in order to give it that sea creature look.

This was an experiment with using lighting and the water material. (thought water would directy relate).

Ideally i woud of like to have done more tutoirials for rendering. But i was short on time with this project and needed to be more time efficient.

My Final Image

In order to select my final image i grouped together my favourite forms from 3ds max.

From this selection i eliminated the ones that didnt fit my words very well..

Although they all in some way or another represent my words, there was one that particularly resembled my precedent. And this was my final choice..

The one is scribbley in that its inperfect. It spirals and its fluid. Although it may not be the most visually appealing it fits my words perfectly.
